Dentists - Choosing Your Dental Care Professional

Choosing a dental care professional isn’t nearly as easy as it sounds. All dentists are not created equally, and there are numerous things to consider. Here are some tips to help you choose the right dental care professional for your oral health care needs.

1. Ask for recommendations. Talk to friends and family members about their dentists. You can also call the American Dental Association to find an ADA dentist. Your insurance company may require that you only use certain dentists as well.

2. Start the selection process over the phone. You will most likely speak with one to two individuals when you call - one may be a receptionist, and the other may be the appointment setter. How do they handle your call? Do they answer all of your questions adequately? Are they rushing you? Find out details such as payment options, appointment time options, and how emergencies are handled on the phone.

3. Try to find a dentist that is convenient for you, in terms of travel. We are busy people, and we don’t like to waste time commuting - especially to the dentists office.

4. Make an appointment for a cleaning, and make it known that you would like to meet with the dentist after the cleaning as well. This gives you the opportunity to not only meet the dentist, but also to meet the hygienist, which you will be seeing twice a year.

5. When you arrive at the office, arrive a little early. Take the time to look around. Does the office appear to be clean? Are the wait times long? Do you hear screaming from the inner offices? Is the staff pleasant?

6. Ask how your dental record will be handled. Also ask for a copy of it when you leave. It’s always good to have your own copy of your dental records.

7. When you meet with the dentist, let him know of any dental fears that you may have, and ask how he will handle those fears to make you more comfortable. Really be aware of how you feel while talking to the dentist. Do you feel comfortable with this dental care provider? If not, move to the next dentist!
